SDDs Are Exponentially More Succinct than OBDDs
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduced by Darwiche [7], sentential decision diagrams (SDDs) are essentially as tractable as ordered binary decision diagrams (OBDDs), but tend to be more succinct in practice. This makes SDDs a prominent representation language, with many applications in artificial intelligence and knowledge compilation. We prove that SDDs are more succinct than OBDDs also in theory, by constructing a family of boolean functions where each member has polynomial SDD size but exponential OBDD size. This exponential separation improves a quasipolynomial separation recently established by Razgon [13], and settles an open problem in knowledge compilation [7].

Basing Decisions on Sentences in Decision Diagrams
The Sentential Decision Diagram (SDD) is a recently proposed representation of Boolean functions, containing Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (OBDDs) as a distinguished subclass. While OBDDs are characterized by total variable orders, SDDs are characterized by dissections of variable orders, known as vtrees. Despite this generality, SDDs retain a number of properties, such as canonicity and a p...

The Sentential Decision Diagram (SDD) is a recently proposed representation of Boolean functions, containing Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (OBDDs) as a distinguished subclass. While OBDDs are characterized by total variable orders, SDDs are characterized more generally by vtrees. As both OBDDs and SDDs have canonical representations, searching for OBDDs and SDDs of minimal size simplifies to...
متن کاملOn the Relative Succinctness of Sentential Decision Diagrams
Sentential decision diagrams (SDDs) introduced by Darwiche in 2011 are a promising representation type used in knowledge compilation. The relative succinctness of representation types is an important subject in this area. The aim of the paper is to identify which kind of Boolean functions can be represented by SDDs of small size with respect to the number of variables the functions are defined ...
متن کاملProbabilistic Equivalence Checking with Propositional DAGs
The canonical representation of Boolean functions offered by OBDDs (ordered binary decision diagrams) allows to decide the equivalence of two OBDDs in polynomial time with respect to their size. It is still unknown, if this holds for other more succinct supersets of OBDDs such as FBDDs (free binary decision diagrams) and d-DNNFs (deterministic, decomposable negation normal forms), but it is kno...
متن کاملBoolean Manipulation with Free BDDs
Free Binary Decision Diagrams (FBDDs), with respect to a predeened type, provide a canonical representation of Boolean functions, and allow eecient solutions of the basic tasks in Boolean function manipulation similarly as the well{known OBDDs do. But in contrast to OBDDs, typed FBDDs allow more (sometimes exponentially more) succinct representations. In the following, we demonstrate the power ...
